What is the Home Energy Challenge?

The Home Energy Challenge is a program for families with K-12 students living in an Eversource electric community in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. It invites students to conduct an insulation experiment by building two model homes using a kit provided by Eversource. One lucky student per state will be randomly selected to win either an iPad or Chrome book!

What is in the Kit?

Eversource will provide you all the materials needed to build your test homes:

Mailing tape
Transparency paper
Aluminum foil – 1 yd
Poster board
Bubble wrap
Cotton batting
Padded paper
Caulking
Weather stripping
2 Cardboard boxes – 9x9x9
Digital thermometer

What will the student learn?

Students will learn the importance of insulation and how different insulations perform better than other forms of insulation. Insulation is a material used to limit the movement of thermal energy or heat. By creating and measuring the temperatures of the project house with and without insulation, students will learn how using insulation can slow or stop the movement of thermal energy (heat) into and out of your home.

Students are encouraged to share photos during and after completion with Eversource by posting a photo of their model homes on their social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) using #HomeEnergyChallenge, and tagging Eversource in their state: @EversourceMA, @EversourceCT or @EversourceNH.*

*Posting on social media doesn’t increase your chances of winning.
