What is the Home Energy Challenge –
Solar Cooker Edition?

The Home Energy Challenge – Solar Cooker Edition is a program for families with K-12 students living in an Eversource community in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Connecticut. This fun and easy project invites students to explore the transformation of radiant energy (light) to thermal energy (heat). All materials needed to participate in the Home Energy Challenge are included in the kit provided by Eversource. One lucky student per state will be randomly selected to win an Apple iPad!

Once registered, Eversource will provide students with one task kit per family that includes all materials (except the food item) needed to participate in the Home Energy Challenge – Solar Cooker Edition.

What is in the Home Energy Challenge Task Kit?

Project Guide
Pizza box
2 sheets black construction paper
1 skewer
Aluminum foil (4 sheets)
Transparency sheet (2)
Thermometer (for up to 200 F)
10 Solar Beads and lanyard for bracelet

What will the students learn?

The Home Energy Challenge – Solar Cooker Edition and accompanying lessons will first explore how radiant energy can transform into chemical energy with the UV solar beads. The second activity will showcase how radiant energy can transform into thermal energy (heat) in a solar oven.
