What is the Home Energy Challenge –
Earth Day 2022?
The Home Energy Challenge – Earth Day 2022 is a program for families with K-12 students living in an Eversource community in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Connecticut. This fun and easy project invites students to explore how flowing water can be used to do work and generate electricity.
Eversource provides the kit which includes the key materials needed to participate in the Home Energy Challenge, other common household items are needed and listed below. One lucky student per state will be randomly selected to win an Apple iPad!
What is in the Home Energy Challenge Task Kit?
Project Guide
1 Wooden skewer
1 Foam craft ball
2 Foam cups
String
5 Wooden spoons
10 Paper clips
Additional items you will need:
Scissors
Tape
Glue
Ruler
Stopwatch (optional)
Safety glasses (optional)
What will the students learn?
Water is an important part of life – we need it to drink, grow plants, move heavy items, and generate renewable electricity.
In this activity you will use paper products to build a water-powered weightlifter turbine, just like many farms or mills may have used. You will experiment to see how many paper clips can be lifted by your turbine. After you test your model, you can explore how to enhance its design to lift more.
As an optional challenge, you can time your weight lifting and crunch some numbers to determine how much power your turbine could produce.

Students are encouraged to share photos during the Home Energy Challenge by posting photos of them working on their projects on their parents’ social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using #HomeEnergyChallenge, and tagging Eversource in their state: @EversourceMA, @EversourceCT or @EversourceNH.*
*Posting on social media doesn’t increase your chances of winning.
