What is the Home Energy Challenge –
The Home Energy Challenge – WooSox Edition is a program for families with K-8 students living in an Eversource community in Massachusetts. This fun and easy project invites students to explore the transformation of radiant energy (light) to chemical energy and thermal energy (heat).
Eversource provides the kit which includes the key materials needed to participate in the Home Energy Challenge, other common household items are needed and listed below. Students will be randomly selected to win great prizes!
What is in the Home Energy Challenge Task Kit?
2 Sheets of black construction paper
2 Transparency sheets
Thermometer (for up to 200° F)
10 UV solar beads
Additional items you will need:
Scissors or safety shears
Newspaper, scrap paper, or other “insulation” material
Other recycled, household, or “found” materials to enhance solar oven design
Food to cook – hot dog, veggie dog, or alternative food item
Meat thermometer (optional)
What will the students learn?
The Home Energy Challenge – WooSox Edition and accompanying lessons will first explore how radiant energy can transform into chemical energy with the UV solar beads. The second activity will showcase how radiant energy can transform into thermal energy (heat) in a solar oven.
Students will use their observations from activity 1 to find the perfect location for the oven they build in activity 2.
Students are encouraged to share photos during the Home Energy Challenge – WooSox Edition by posting photos of them working on their projects on their parents’ social media channels* (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using #HomeEnergyChallenge, and tagging Eversource Massachusetts: @EversourceMA and the Worcester Red Sox: Facebook + Instagram @GoWooSox and/or Twitter @WooSox
*Posting on social media doesn’t increase your chances of winning.
