What is the Home Energy Challenge –
Wind Edition?

The Home Energy Challenge – Wind Edition is a program for families with K-12 students living in an Eversource community in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Connecticut. This fun and easy project invites students to explore the transformation of wind into energy to do work.

Eversource provides the kit which includes the key materials needed to participate in the Home Energy Challenge, other common household items are needed and listed below. One lucky student per state will be randomly selected to win an Apple iPad!

What is in the Home Energy Challenge Task Kit?

Project Guide
1 Foam cup
1 Drinking straw
1 Stirrer straw
String
2 Straight pins
1 Binder clip
10 Paper clips
1 4-blade Windmill template

Additional items you will need:
Scissors
Tape
Fan
Rules
Hole puncher
Stopwatch (optional)

What will the students learn?

Wind is moving air. Although we can’t always see the wind, it does work for us every day – grinding, lifting, and pushing objects, and generating electricity. This activity uses simple paper products to demonstrate how the motion energy in wind can be transformed to allow us to do work.  Students will build a model windmill and improve it to see how powerful their design can be.

Students are encouraged to share photos during the Home Energy Challenge by posting photos of them working on their projects on their parents social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) using #HomeEnergyChallenge, and tagging Eversource in their state: @EversourceMA, @EversourceCT or @EversourceNH.*
